Drowning Treatment

We are not experts in first aid, this is just a guide from us to assist you, if you want to learn more about First Aid for Children you should contact your local health service and find out what courses are available in your area.

Babies and young children can drown quickly if they slip into a pool or pond or are left unattended in a bath. Even 2.5cm (1in) of water is enough to cover a baby's nose and mouth if she falls forwards.

If your child does fall into water follow this guide

  • Lift your child out of the water. Carry her with her head lower than her chest to reduce the risk of inhaling water.
  • TAKE YOUR CHILD TO HOSPITAL, even if she seems recovered, as she may have inhaled water, causing lung damage.

    The Unconscious child

  • If you child is unconscious, be prepared to resuscitate.
  • Open their airway, check for breathing and check their pulse, place them in the recovery position if breathing.
  • remove any wet clothing and cover him with a dry towel or blanket and CALL FOR AN AMBULANCE

WATER in the lungs and the effects of cold can increase resistance to artificial ventilation so you may need to breathe more firmly and more slowly to get the chest to rise.
