Below are some tips to consider when travelling by air, this is not a complete list, and if you think we have missed something or you have found something works for you, get in touch and we will add it on.

You may feel that you will need an extra truck, aircraft or boat to cater for your baby whether you are going abroad or holidaying in the UK. You can enjoy the adventure but try to stick to a few simple rules and your journey should go smoothly.

Have Baby, will travel by air

• your baby will need a passport to travel abroad
• you will not need to pay for your baby on an aircraft, they will be sat on your lap. Most airlines let infants under two years fly for free.
• Some airlines do not take infants under 48 hours olds and they only take babies up to a week old with a doctors certificate
• a mother who has given birth within 48 hours are also not allowed to fly. If you have had a c-section you will have to wait at least 10 days.
• most airlines offer travel cots for long-haul flights and they are recommended for children under 6 months
• babies tend not to suffer from ear-popping on planes. A toddler may complain, but time it with them having a drink or sucking a lolly or sweet at take-off and landing may minimise the effect
• check out your destination for illness and whether your baby is covered. Routine vaccinations in the UK include diptheria, polio, tetanus, meningitis (Hib) and you can request tuberculosis. Other exotic diseases such as yellow fever cannot be given to babies under 6 months. You should also include mosquito repellant and net for your baby
• take your buggy or pram to the aircraft. Don't check it in, as you may need it in the airport. You can take your buggy or pram to the aeroplane door where they will take it from you and put it in the hold
• try to have a bag with all your requirements for the next few hours. If you are breastfeeding you won't need to worry about sterile products. If you are using formula there are very handy cartons now available to use. Sterile bottles and teats can be prepared before you leave and keep them in your cabin luggage.
• keep with you a blanket, or sheet that smells of you and your washing powder. Babies smell is very strong and they will be comforted by the familiar smell.
• don't be afraid to ask for help, the staff are usually very accommodating.
• if the baby cries, let them. Don't get anxious about other passengers, you have every right to be on the aircraft with your baby. If you are travelling long haul you can speak to your Doctor about a mild sedative to help the baby sleep.
• changing nappies on the aircraft can be fun!
