Maternity services

The maternity services questionnaire has now been removed from the site.

Firstly, a big thank you to everyone who filled in the questionnaire - we had over 130 replies. We've forwarded the results to AIMS (Association for the Improvement of maternity services) and hope to be able to progress some of the findings with them to further improve services.

Overall, we are delighted to say that the results were very positive. 80% of all respondents were very positive about the standard of care they had received and had high praise for the medical staff concerned.

"I was kept informed about everything that was happening to me."

"The midwife was brilliant."

"I was inundated with Doctors looking after me."

A particularly positive note came from women giving birth for the second or third time who had seen huge improvements in the level of care being offered since the birth of their first baby.

"The hospital has been extensively refurbished and is relaxing, an enjoyable experience in my third pregnancy. A lot has changed since my second child was born 8 years ago and my first 12 years ago. Things are definitely better now."

There were some negative comments mostly relating to NHS personnel such as not enough time being taken to explain procedures, not enough staff and particularly lack of communication between medical staff and between medical staff and parents.

"The midwife was fantastic, but when the doctors were involved, due to complications (forceps delivery) they didn't inform us about what they were doing, we even had to ask the sex of our child."

"There was poor interaction between the midwives and the doctors."

However, overall the feedback was very positive and this will make reassuring reading for all expectant parents.

"Although the staff were quite stretched and their numbers depleted, the remaining ones were extremely attentive and always had time for their patients."

One mum who gave birth at York District hospital sums up the feelings of many of you:

"I have nothing but praise, for the NHS baby staff" ....praise indeed!

Here are some more of the detailed comments we received.

"I was impressed by the willingness of the midwife to listen and incorporate my wishes and ideas."

"I felt that my midwife showed a genuine interest in me. I wasn't just another mother on a production line"

"Everyone listened to me and gave me a lot of support for the type of birth I wanted."

"Although the staff where quite stretched and their numbers were depleted, the remaining ones were extremely attentive and always had time for their patients."

"We are given a group of 4 midwifes who will be with us throughout the time before the birth, with one of the midwifes actually being there to deliver the baby."

"I knew I could just call for information if and when I needed."

"I understand that I live in a poor borough and resources are low but the attention and care provided was terrible."

"When handed over to the Midwifes, we were only given a date of when they would visit, which meant staying in for the full day, as they couldn't give a time slot. Once they didn't even turn up."

"I felt I was treated with less care as it wasn't my first child. My pregnancy was stressful and I needed more support."

"I saw three different midwives. My official midwife failed to recognise that my baby was breech and wouldn't send me to the hospital for a scan because she said, "It costs lots of money". The midwife I saw the following week sent me to the hospital straight away."

"Lack of information, extremely long waiting times, lack of interest by midwives and departmental staff."

"There were mainly temporary staff on duty and I felt they had no time to spare to answer any questions or help I required."
