Part time work
|
Finding suitable part time work can be an enormous challenge. On this page we've featured the stories of a number of mums and dads plus a list of part time job opportunities. If you'd like to share your experience or know of any part time job opportunities that we've missed please let us know by emailing feedback@forparentsbyparents.com. Hi, I wanted something which I could dip in and out of, hours which suited me. I joined Avon, just to make a little extra every month but now I've found about building my own team and make more money by doing this along with selling to my own customers. I only put in a couple of hours during the week and I also work on a Sunday - after a year and a half of only a few hours a week I now make a couple of hundred pounds every month. Check out http://www.EarnWhatYouAreWorth.co.uk for more information. There's no initial outlay and full training given. Edith I have 2 young children a 2 year old and a 1 year old. going back to work meant all my money was going to childcare, therefore there was no point in working and missing my children grow up. I was at a mothers and toddler group, when I met my manager, she told me about the opportunity Virgin Vie can give you, the commission starts at 25% and can go up to 37%. before long I soon joined, I was fully trained and prepared for my first party (which earnt me £87.00 in just 2 hours. since then I've been hooked and now traing to be a manager, my goal is to put both of my children in to private school and earn myself a rav4 absolutly free from virgin. At the moment I can afford to send my oldest to private school, he's due to start Sep 07, so now I'm just growing my business to send my daughter who's due to start in sep 08. Thanks to Virgin Vie and Richard Branson!! I have my own life, spend time with my children, lots of extra cash and a good future for my family. Nicola I am a mum of a 2 year old and a 7 year old, a few months ago I started working as an Usborne books representative. It is a fantastic way to earn a little spare cash and it's something that helps my children as I now have some great books in my kit that they can borrow. Sarah I found Captain Tortue, French children’s clothes, when I was looking for a new and different challenge. The company has been selling contemporary, high quality children’s wear for 10 years in France exclusively through Independent Consultants. So I knew it worked and was not going to be a complete gamble to start the UK team. Designer clothes without the designer price-tag is a good description. Selling clothes by socialising with friends (and their friends) is a dream job. So is working from home, at your own pace but still having lots of contact with new people. To make an opportunity like this work, you just need to love fashion, know other mums and be committed to get if off the ground. Consultants are almost all mothers but our children are all ages; from Lucy with 9 months old Thomas, Emma with 4 children from 6 to 14 years and mine are 15 and 18. Of course they are all our live models and really enjoy having a great wardrobe as the clothes start at age 6 months and go to 16 years. There are lots of direct sales opportunities out there, primarily because they offer the flexibility of having your own business without needing a huge investment or taking big risks. If you are looking for a new challenge and something different from the rest, find out more about our brand new company and join us on day one. For more information contact Mimi on 01903 74 4444 or email info.uk@captain-tortue.com www.captain-tortue.com provides a snapshot but not full information of the ranges." Mimi I have looked into network marketing, usually selling e-books and products but this wasn’t really for me and usually you had to put up a lot of money up front. I am glad to say though that there are some really good opportunities out there, the first I’d like to tell you about is about writing and writing about what you know. Basically, you make a content based site about something you know and love (so it doesn’t feel like work). Ken Evoy tells you all about how to go about it in his free e-book The Affiliates Masters Course, you can get a copy of that by sending an email to me at ksomerfield@tiscali.co.uk. There really are no hidden costs and if you’re not sure what I mean just take a look at the site I’m building at www.free-craft-for-kids.com and yes you guessed it my specialist subject is kids arts and crafts. The other thing I found in my tireless search for a home business to make extra money was the Tiscali Network. They are a telephone and Internet Service Provider. You can save up to 89% on your BT phone line with them. They pay you to tell your friends basically. If you recommend three people for Tiscali Broadband you earn £50. It really is a good deal and it has the potential to make a good home business or just a few extra pennies dependent on what you want. Again send me an email if you'd like more info or visit their site at www.tiscali.co.uk/products/nm/website/summer/. Karen I am a full-time Mum to our four children aged six, five, three and two. My main job is the home education of our children but I also find time to promote and sell Barefoot Books. I had not heard of Barefoot before my friend mentioned it and she did so at a point when I was looking for a little ‘me’ time where I could work and not just be ‘Mum’. The biggest hurdle was trying to fit in a job around my children and my husband, who works unsocial hours. With this in mind I had almost decided to go back to nursing, but when I found out about the Stallholder Programme I decided becoming a stallholder sounded much more appealing! I wanted to organise my time around my family and feel good about being my own boss. As a Stallholder, you can work as little or as much as you like. The hours are flexible and you choose when you want to work, making it easy to fit in around children and husbands. The books are so beautiful that they practically sell themselves, and it is great to be doing something where you know you are helping bring pleasure and enjoyment into children’s lives.

We wanted to share our story and give other parents the chance to enjoy their children as much as we do. My husband and I both worked in high powered / high paid jobs, with long hours, before we had children. Now we have a 3 year old and a 9 week old and we spend most of every day with them and go on at least 2 holidays a year. We have many friends who still do the long hours working for someone else and spend only a small amount of time with their children. Many say they envy us! What we do is run a successful Network Marketing team, promoting cheap telephone and Internet access. The business was only set up in April 03, when we were expecting our second child. The business is now going really well, I have just decided that I am not going back to work after my maternity leave finishes next month. My husband is also a part time mortgage consultant and he has decided that within 12 months he will be giving up that job too. It’s great to have the special time now whilst the boys are young to spend time with them and watch them grow. There are many Network Marketing businesses available and if you really want to get away from the 9-5 grind and more important see your kids grow up then have a look around, there are loads of companies on the Internet. There are a number of businesses that are run by delivering catalogues and goods to people’s doors, we can put you in touch with friends who are in such networks. Our business can be done from your home without going visiting people, or holding stock, as well as making money you save money on telephone and Internet calls. I know this sounds a bit like a sales pitch and it is in a way, but the main reason is to give other parents some more choices so that they can choose to spend more time with their family. I know how much pleasure we are getting from it, and you don’t get to have these years over again there’s only one go at this. One of our visitors, Chris, has set up a web site with an enormous amount of information about how you can earn money from the Internet. We thought it worth highlighting the potential for work as Mystery Shoppers as this is something we haven't come across before. Mystery shopping is a superb way to work part time as it fits nicely in between school hours. The work is arranged via the net or the phone and the work is performed whilst your children are safely at school. I work for various companies and the nice thing about it is that you can do several mystery shops in one area between 10am-2pm and still earn a full time wage. For more info visit www.borntoloaf.co.uk/mystery%20shopping.htm I have 2 children aged 9 and nearly 4 and I am a driving instructor. I started my training for this whilst on maternity leave with my first child and you can train as fast or slow as you wish. I cannot think of any other job which would give me the same sort of flexibility with hours and days and as many or as few as you like. As my youngest daughter is at nursery school in the afternoons I do a few hours then and evenings / weekends when my partner is around. Once she goes to full time school I will do more hours but as now I can still take time off around inset days school plays, sports days etc. If you already have a small car then there is very little additional outlay as you can have dual controls fitted into any car. The sort of money you earn varies according to your hours but what other job would pay £17 an hour its nearly full time money for part time hours!!!! Click here for more information about becoming a driving instructor and a directory of training establishments in the UK. I moved to Brighton 18 months ago. My daughter was due to start school in September and as a single parent having worked full time whilst she was young, I was determined to be around to take her to and from school. I felt that once my daughter had started school I would be able to look around and find something part-time to fit in with school hours - how wrong I was! By the time the school run had been included in my day, I found I was only available from around 9.30 to 2.20 and then there were inset days and school holidays to contend with. I answered a number of small ads in the paper for companies looking for part-time home workers - most of which were 'get rich quick' schemes that involved a high outlay with no guarantee of any returns. Luckily one I found one for Herbalife. After full training I now promote their products from home on an hours to suit basis. I can work whether my daughter is at school or home so it's ideal for parents. For more information you can visit my web site at www.preferredliving.co.uk or email me at lisa.jones3@virgin.net." Finding a part time job that enabled me to work and be the main carer of my son was far harder than I expected. At first I applied for positions that would build on my career, hoping to find a company that would be happy for me to work three days or job share. Nothing came of six months of interviews and assessment centres. A few job offers yes but none of the companies where interested in anything but full time. I then realised I'd have to think more creatively and eventually found a fantastic job as an Academic Support Worker at my local college. I was still using my IT skills but supporting students with learning difficulties. My boss was happy for me to work as little or as much as I wanted. People worked from full time to 2 half days. The money wasn't as good as I'd been used to but I decided that this was a compromise I was willing to accept in return for working 2 days per week. Most colleges need support workers so if this appeals to you contact you local college and ask for the Learning Support Department. I found Mary Kay cosmetics quite by chance at the local Ideal Home Show. You never know where you will find new opportunities as I was actually looking for a company like Mary Kay to give me the freedom to work around my family, and make some money. It's a great way of meeting people, boosts your confidence and you can take Mary Kay as far as you wish. You decide how many hours to work and the training is free and extensive. You can find out more at www.marykay.co.uk. I'm Nicki, mum of three children, 7, 5 and 2 years. A year ago I started selling Usborne books to friends and family. I have now built my own little business and have my own money, but I'm still at home with my children. Before this I had been a home mum for 7 ish years. Through doing this part time job I've also regained so much of the self confidence that had gradually melted away, had fun and met lots of people. I would recomend trying this to anyone!! For more information please contact me at Geoffnicki@bun.com. I have a 2 year old and have been working from home for the last 18 months selling Usborne childrens books. It really is a fantastic job with great commission, fun incentives, no minimum sales targets and no pressure. What other job can you do and take under 5's with you?? If you would like to earn extra cash for Christmas or are interested in a part-time job or full-time career please contact me at nicolajbowden@hotmail.com for further information. You can also find information at the Usborne At Home web site, www.usbornebooksathome.co.uk. Hello, my name is Tracey and I have three children 4, 17 months and 4 weeks. I became a consultant for Virgin Cosmetics in September last year, after holding two of their fabulous parties at home. My manager approached me and said she thought I would make a great consultant, so I thought why not and gave it a go. Being a consultant involves party plan type work. There are several different types of parties you can do, skincare, colour, spa/detox, aromatherapy, manicures. They are a great girlie night out and everybody has a lot of fun, including me! It's a great way to meet new people and hardly feels like working at all. I earn commission on everything I sell, 25% base rate which rises to 28% and 31%. I have also earnt loads of free virgin products and also jewellery. There are numerous incentive plans for you to earn free products including dinner with Sir Richard Branson himself, holidays, cars, electrical items, jewellery etc. This is a job which fits in really well with my home life, I am only out for a couple of hours, two evenings a week so don't miss out on anything with the children or my husband. You totally control the hours you work and there is no minimum sales or hours to meet. For more details please contact me at tracey@tfellows.freeserve.co.uk or visit www.virgincosmetics.com. Below is a list part time job opportunities. We are sure there must be many more that we've missed - if you can add to this list please let us know by emailing feedback@forparentsbyparents.com.
