Self confidence

Deciding whether to return to work or not brings up a complex set of issues. Some women find their biggest challenge is having the self-confidence to return to work. In this section we will share your thoughts and experiences in an open and honest way.

If you would like to share your experiences with other parents please email:contributions@forparentsbyparents.co.uk.

"I have been at home for what will be six years next April, after having my third child - I was a full time legal secretary. I am currently completing my final year of a health studies degree but I am really starting to panic about returning to work next year. I'm convinced that because of the nature of my qualification I would be best suited to working full time to establish myself. It has been a struggle financially over these past years but I have been lucky enough to just about manage. I'm not sure going back to work full time will suit the children having been used to my being here almost 24/7.Yet at the same time part of me wants to get out there and do something for myself again."

"I remember being the manager of a girl coming back from maternity leave. She rang me before coming back in a real panic, she honestly didn't think she could do the job anymore. I was really shocked. She was a really confident person and I couldn't believe she felt like this. Obviously, I told her not to be daft and of course, she was fine. But now I have had time off after my son I can totally understand how she felt."

"The longer you stay off work, the harder it gets to go back, I think. I was really ready to go back when Ben was 4 months old, but now nearly 2 years on I am beginning to wonder if I actually can go back. It is amazing how you lose confidence and actually doubt that you did what you did at work. It seems like I'm remembering a different person."
