I have a young baby and would not normally consider taking her in a car without a car seat. My comment relates to the specific exemption for taxis. Our car broke down and I had to use the bus. I was offerred a lift home - but no car seat was available. A taxi would be legal, but apparently not my friend's car. An emergency is an exception if the child is over 3 years. I am not sure why this does not apply to younger children too.

At last they are cracking down on irresponsible parents. I see many small children rattling around on the back seat of cars, and lots of primary school children clipped into the front seat without a booster seat.

My daughter was really excited about having to have a booster seat in the back. At first I thought the whole thing was just a waste of money and time, but after fitting a booster seat I realised that it gave my daughter better vision and the seat belt sat in the correct place.

As a registered childminder I think the new laws are fantastic all childminders already use the correct seating for the children but I hate it when I see a parent drive a car with there young child climbing about the rear seat I hope the police will be stop and check these cars to make the parents take better care of their child

New regulations are confusing in the way they are presented.

To me there appears little changed. The only real change for personal transport that I can see is that 3-11 year olds need a mandatory suitable restraint (which I thought was mandatory anyway) - but the law fails to define that restraint.

I currently use child boosters, so will that be illegal or legal?

To add to the confusion the law states height as the benchmark, car seat manufacturers use weight as the benchmark.

The Law could have been more comprehensive and stipulated which car seats are suitable for which cars.

I went to the Britax website which I assume is one of the larger manufacturers of car seats and no category 3 seat is suitable for my Mercedes E class or Toyota Avensis.

Even my husband - a serving police officer did not know about the law change with regards to car seats - as do very few of his fellow serving officers. I put my son in my neighbours booster seat (he's 10 ) the seat belt then has to be fed under his arm pit as he is too high for it to go over. I'm all for safety but this is plain dangerous - he is now only restrained by a lap belt! Also with such bad road congestion i car share on school trips - we will no longer be able to do this however as i cannot pick up without car seats and there is no room at the school for parents to leave car seats for other parents when they pick up. - it's such a shame the government don't research and implement their policies more thoughtfully!
