Road Safety Tips for Children and Parents

Top tips for the journey to school

Walking to school

Aged 7, your child may still be holding your hand. By age 10, your child may be going to school independently. If you’re walking your child to school, it’s a great opportunity to teach important road safety lessons and to lead by example. If your child is walking without you, ask them to take you on their school route so that you can talk through possible hazards together.

Walking to school in rural areas

Road safety for children

If you’re walking to school on a road with no pavements, remember to always walk facing the oncoming traffic.

Cycling to school

Make sure that your child has a cycle helmet and wears it every time they ride their bike. Check whether cycle training courses are available at your child’s school, or in your local area, by contacting the Road Safety Officer in your local council.

Travelling to school by car

If your child is aged about 4-11 (weighing 15 to 36 kgs), the safest way for them to travel is with a booster seat or booster cushion.

As the days get darker

The clocks go back on October 30th and the days will start to get darker. When your child is out on the roads, make sure they are easily visible. Bright or fluorescent clothes show up best by day and reflective material is best by night.
