Milk Madness
New European Laws could see changes in formula milk promotion. The rule switch lets manufacturers make health boasts about their products - and include new ingredients before they have been tested for safety. The Department of Health have denied that the law will change as this would damage their campaign to encourage women to breastfeed. Finding out about formula milk can be difficult, you probably rely on other mums to give you advice, let us know how you picked the formula you use, whether you breastfed or not, we would like to know your thoughts. Read about Milk Madness Share your story with us and we will publish it on this page Your Comments and ViewsThis really frustrates me!!! I did not want to breastfeed my first child nor my second child as I did not feel comfatable with the thought of breastfeeding at home or in public. I therefore chose to formula feed my children and found it very difficult to find information on the subject. In the end I read the internet and the ingredients within all the different formaula milks and chose to go with APTIMIL. Both my children are very healthy, a good weight and very happy!! Why do the government insist on telling us what is best for us!! I am 32 years old with a mind of my own and if I don't want to breast feed it is my decision to make and therefore I should be offered help on chosing the alternatives. I have seen other mums in tears at constantly having to breastfeed their children, being told that their child needs to put more weight on (where the mother is exclusively breastfeeding). It also annoys me that manufacturers are not able to offer money off coupons on the 1st formula feed and supermarkets are not allowed to issue loyalty points on such products as this might persuade mums to buy formula milk rather than breastfeed!!! Vicky I wish more information was available on formula milk, especially for mothers to be who know they will not be able to breastfeed. I know that after major surgery to my breasts that my new baby will not be able to breast feed. But instead of being given helpful information about different types of formula milk are available to me, I am constantly being made to feel inadequate and cruel for not breastfeeding, thanks to the 'breast is best' campaign. I say yes to more information, but not from untested products. There needs to be a balance for the mother and the baby. Ruth I don't think formula should be allowed to be advertised if you open the market to advertising then breastfeeding would drop even more as the claims they make over whelm new inexperinced mothers into actually believing that formula is as good as or better than breast milk and this is untrue but the power of advertising will win the war. breastfeeding is hard and takes commitment and some just want an easy life if they are told formula is as close to breast milk then why even try to breastfeed? in reality formula will never be even half as good as breastmilk as babies were made for mummy milk and boobs were made to feed them! finding out about formula is NOT hard just step into a super market there are loads of brands all making claims that they are closer to breastmilk this is in my opinion total rubbish, closer to breast milk than what Cows Milk!!! I breastfed my daughter exclusivly for 5 1/2 months and continued till she was 15 mths old. in this world of ease and quick fixes I hope that breast feeding doesn't become extinct its what we were made to do! Em Hi, I breastfed for 2 weeks I had to give it up as I was unable to produce enough. so I started using SMA gold formula milk which made I big difference my baby was a lot happier she slept better. I will try breast feeding again as and when I have another baby but breast feeding is not for everyone Becky For my first child I used SMA Gold (what my mum had used with me) when I found I could not cope with trying to breastfeed. At 6 months I had several free sachets of Hipp Organic Follow On Milk and tried that, which she liked and have carried on using it. With my second, I again had problems breast feeding and went to Hipp Organic First Milk but my baby found this too liquid and not enough (she cried all the time) so went back to SMA Gold and she was a happy baby and still going strong on it at 5 months. Will probably change to Hipp Organic Follow on after 6 months though as I try to give as much organic food as possible. Kim |
