MMR Vaccine
Yet again the health professionals are trying to change the way we receive the information on the MMR vaccinations. Thirty of Britain's top child health doctors last night issued an unprecedented appeal for an end to controversy over the MMR vaccine. The article in the Daily Mail is very interesting reading. As a parent who has used both single vaccinations and the MMR I do find it hard to judge any particular way. I just know that I did what was best at the time and the advice available at the time. How are parents coping today with the confused message still being given out? Let me know and we will publish your stories. We have a very informative immunisation guide on the site have a look and I hope that it helps. Immunisation Information Have a read of the article, Daily Mail - MMR Jabs But let us know what you think and we will publish your responses on this page. Your Views and CommentsIs there anybody who can give me some advice on where to get my daughter immunised with the single jabs and not the 5 in 1 jabs. I am very concerned as I have a 9 year old son with very bad health problems, which he was ok until we had him immunised. We live in the Stoke on Trent area and any imformation would be appreciated. We have been to the doctor and they will not give us any imformation... nina When my first daughter was born, my husband and I read loads about MMR and really thought deeply about the risks etc before deciding to let her have the triple vaccine. So for my second daughter, the decision was already made for us and she had the MMR vaccine when she was 15 months old (as soon as she was well, healthy and free from colds etc). However, 6 weeks later, she contracted encephalitis, was in a coma for 3 weeks, in hospital for 3 months, and eventually came home unable to see, move, or communicate in any way. We had to fee her through a nasogastric tube and were warned that her brain had sustained widespread damage and could remain severely mentally and physically disabled. Now, noone has ever siad that the MMR vaccine is in any way to blame. A cause has never been found for the encephalitis, but the possibility is definitely there. HOWEVER, the main thing I would like to highlight to everyone is not whether to have the MMR or not, that is for each person to think about and decide, but to be aware of how devastating can be the effects of encephalitis. Apparently fewer than one in a million children get encephalitis from MMR vaccine, but IF your child gets measles, then the chances of developing encphalitis is between one in 200 and one in 5000. So there are wider issues than the diseases themselves, but the side effects that may be more likely to happen. Thankfully, our daughter is prooving her doctors wrong, and 2 years on, she is a very happy, healthy girl. She has learning and communication disabilities and behavioural problems due to her brain damage, and she is not the girl she would have been without the encephalitis, but she's here with us and we are very lucky.
