Obesity in 4 year olds

Obesity Tests

An article about a obesity tests for four-year olds caught my attention.

With a 4 year old myself, I was shocked to read tests will be carried out on children between the age of four and 10 to see if they are overweight.

The Department of Health has plans to go ahead with tests, despite opponents saying it could lead to overweight children being bullied. But extra help won't be offered to overweight pupils, so what's the point. Just another test that will make the children feel vulnerable and expose them.

Surely parents need support and advice on the best way to help their children to learn and eat a nutricious diet. Perhaps a better use of the money would be to develop a national nutritional food campaign and educate the parents.

I do not have a problem with childrens weight being monitored - but it should be through normal visits to the doctor NOT at school as there is no way for it to remain private to each student. I was slightly overweight as a child and was bullied. My step son is not overweight but was bullied for being fat simply because his coat was a bit to big one winter.

With bulling being as well known about at the moment, I cannot believe they would be willing to give bullies/rude children/children who don't know better the ammo needed to continue what they already do or start in on new children.

These tests should be done at regular visits with the doctor and discussed with the parents. How is the school planning on discussing what I would consider needed info with the parents of all children? If it is done at a doctors office, the child will not need to worry about the effects and the parent will be able to discuss concerns and so on.

I am currently pregnant and dread this baby having to go through this later in life.
