As mothers are we being failed by the NHS, as the report from the Britain’s health watchdog has claimed, describing half of all maternity wards as only fair or weak.

We know that there ia a shortage of midwives which means mothers and babies are often sent home before they are ready and they do not get the help they need to start breastfeeding.

With Alan Johnson, the Health Secretary, responding by announcing an additional £122m a year for the next three years to “ensure mothers will get the best possible care and are guaranteed a full range of birthing choices”, shall we wait and see?
