Thank you for supporting us in completing the breastpump survey. The results were very interesting. 1,073 of you completed the survey and below is what you had to say.

Results printed April 2007

Q1. Have you considered using a breastpump? 59% said you had already used one, with 30% considering it and 10% not considering it at all.
Q2. What reason made you purchase a pump? Over 22% of you never actually purchased a pump, 18% purchased because of breastfeeding difficulties, and 14% on the recommendation of a friend or relative. What is surprising that only 6% of you were recommended to purchase from the hospital. But 37% of you specified other reasons for purchasing a pump.
Q3. How did you find out about the pump you purchased? With over 21% of you finding out about breast pumps from magazines, and nearly 10% from the internet, other locations came out the highest at nearly 29%. Not really surprising but 16% of you learned from friends. The television only accounted for 0.3% of you. However, 22% of you never purchased a pump.
Q4. What brand of pump did you purchase? With 55% of you purchasing Avent, the next most popular brand was Medela with 11%, Ameda came third with 1.4% and no-one purchased Whittlestone. Again a high figure with, 22% never purchased a brand and 8% of you chose other brands.
Q5. Were you successful with your pump? An amazing 60% of you who bought a pump were successful, however 14% of you were not. 24% of you never tried to use one.
Q6. If you had difficulties, what help did you receive? We were amazed, but not surprised, to see that 54% of you received no help and support when difficulties arose. nearly 15% of you got help from your Health Visitor, 7.5% from friends and relatives, and GP's giving just over 2% support. nearly 7% received other support.
Q7. If you gave up breastfeeding because of difficulties, would having access to a breast pump have helped you to continue? With over 14% of you saying No it would not have made a difference and 13% of you saying yes it would have it was quite close, however nearly 70% of you said it was not applicable.
Q8. If you had access to a breastpump at work, would you have more likely continued breastfeeding? The result was quite interesting in that is was nearly 50/50. Of those that answered this question 47% of you said yes it would and 46% said it would not have made a difference.

The percentage figures quoted are based on the number of people who answered that question. With an overall response of 1,073, not all respondents answered every question.

Note: The Department of Health recommends exclusive breastfeeding for the first six months. If you would like help in coping with difficulties like these, please see our Support Links.
