Idealy, it is best to know that you are pregnant as early on as possible. The first few weeks in a
developing baby's life are crucial. Knowing that you are pregnant means that you can take extra
care of yourself and your unborn child. So how can you tell if you are pregnant or not?

Answer

Changes to your Body
When a woman becomes pregnant, the body begins to produce hormones in large quantities to maintain the
pregnancy. These hormones result in many physical changes to the body. Women who have a multiple pregnancy,
twins or triplets, are likely to have stronger physical signs in the early days due to higher levels
of hormones. Some women say that they instinctively know that they are pregnant while others first
realise when they begin to notice the physical changes to their bodies.

Missed period (amennorhoea)
One of the most reliable early signs that you may be pregnant is a missed period, especially if you have
a regular cycle or have noted when you ovulate. Some women do not miss a period completely when they
are first pregnant but instead have a very light period. If you have either missed a period or have had
some very light periods, you may wish to consider taking a pregnancy test - see Tell tale signs of pregnancy

Nausea and sickness (morning sickness)
The term "morning sickness" is often used, but is misleading as women can feel nauseous and even be sick
at any or several points in the day. Most, but not all women find that these feelings usually pass after
the first twelve weeks or so.
Tiredness
It is common for women to feel very tired, drowsy and even irritable in the first few weeks of pregnancy.
Needing to pass water more often
Some women find that quite early on in their pregnancy they notice that they have to go to the toilet
more often to pass water. This is caused by the womb beginning to grow and pressing down on the bladder.
Strong sense of smell and noticing a strange taste in the mouth
Many women find that they have a heightened sense of smell and notice particular dislike of odours such as
fruit, petrol and cigarette smoke. Other women report a strange "metallic" taste in their mouths.
It is also common to find that women become hungrier or have particular food cravings.
Changes to Breasts
One effect of the increased hormones is a change to the breasts. Many women notice that their breasts can feel
larger and more tender. They may also tingle and the nipples may seem darker.
