The stem cells are collected from blood contained in the umbilical cord and placenta after a baby has been born.

There are two ways this can be done:

In-utero collection

In-utero collection is made while the placenta is still in the womb. The umbilical cord will have been clamped and cut so blood is not taken away from the baby.

Ex-utero collection

Ex-utero collection happens after the third stage of pregnancy when the placenta has been delivered. Again, the umbilical cord will have been clamped and cut before the blood is taken.

The decision on the means of collecting the baby’s cord blood is taken by YOU and the healthcare professional that collects the cord blood – the collection kits provided seem to be suitable for either approach.
