How it works and the steps you should consider
There seems to be a common process for the collection and storage across all the providers of this service.
Steps
What happens
Step One
Research thoroughly and look into all the providers of this service.
Step Two
Discuss your birth plan with your health professional, GP or Midwife.
Check with your hospital or delivery suite that you will be able to have this service.
Once you have got agreement for this to happen, get your kit from your chosen
provider.
When the baby has arrived safely and you are both well, the blood will be collected from the cord or
placenta. A blood sample will also be needed from you to ensure that you are clear from any viruses that
might affect the stem cell collection.
Step Three
Both your samples will be couriered to the laboratory where they are both tested to make sure that
there isn't any kind of virus that could affect how the baby's cord blood stem cells are stored.
They will also test to see how many stem cells have been collected.
Step Four
In the UK, regulations require that the mother has a second blood test after six months.
Most providers send you the kit to perform this test.
Step Five
Once your 2nd test is clear the cells will be stored in a long-term cryogenic storage. This means
at an extremely low temperature.
Most will provide you with a certificate of storage.
Storage times seem to be up to 20 years.
Step Six
Hopefully you will never have to use this Step.
Depending on whether you have opted to use a private or public bank, you will have different
processes to follow. You should check this out carefully at Step One.
However, should you require these cells, all you need to do is contact them and they liaise
with you and your doctor to make any necessary arrangements.
