I was still feeling sick and tired, and my jeans continue to get tighter. By 11 weeks I couldn't even wear my jeans. The scan date was getting closer and we couldn't wait. It was the 4th May and off we went. They called us all in, which we were quite surprised about, we thought they would call me in first, check if everything was okay and then call in Paul. There was a trainee sonographer, and they asked if we were happy with her doing the scan, we didn't mind. I lay down on the bed and the sonographer started to move the thing around my stomach. She moved it from one side to the other, I was a little worried, couldn't she find anything. I looked at Paul and he put his thumb up - he could see something. The sonographer asked if Id been feeling really sick, I told her and she smiled. The trainee then called the other sonographer over, Paul looked worried and then his face just dropped and he went white, he looked like he was going to be sick. He looked straight at me and as he mouhted I think there's two, I heard the sonographer say to the trainee, "Ill let you tell them the good news". The trainee said, "congratulations your'e having twins". I couldn't stop laughing. She turned the screen round so we could see them. Katie said "my daddy doesn't want twins, he only wants one don't you daddy", that made everyone in the room laugh. I couldn't look at Paul, I kept breaking into laughter when I saw his face, "oh my god, I don't delieve it" Paul kept saying, that made me laugh more. The sonographer showed each us of the babies and their heartbeats and then the two together. There they were our two beautiful litte babies and their tiny little hearts. They trainee took us to the department to book our next scan, it suddenly dawned on me that we had forgot to ask when our due date was, the woman making the appointment looked in our book and told us 22 Nov. She asked if everything went well and I said yes except we had the shocking news of twins - she congratulated us and then said she couldn't book us in there as I needed to be consultant led. She showed us where to go and we booked in for the 10 July 2006 for our 20 week scan. Paul kept shaking his head, saying he couldn't believe it, I just kept breaking out into fits of laughter - "you won't be laughing in nine months" he said, his face as white as a sheet. We couldn't believe it, we didn't find out I was pregnant with Katie until I was 6 months and now I had topped that by finding out I was having twins. I telephoned my mum, she didnt believe us "why are you laughing" she said, "are you sure you are telling me the truth", she really thought I was winding her up. In fact, everyone did, they didn't believe us until they saw the scan pictures. Paul and I had to go back to work, I couldn't concentrate, Paul rang me later that day "how are you feeling" he said, "I don't know, excited, scared, I don't know, how was you supposed to feel, what about you" - same as you he said. Paul was already beginning to worry about money, especially as we still had some work to do on the house. That night after work, we hardly had chance to talk as I was out that evening playing darts. I went along to darts and told the team, they were all talking about it and I decided not to play and go back home. I got home and we didn't know what to say, we found it hard to talk about how we felt. We were both excited, shocked, scared but neither of us could actually say how we felt, we needed time to get used to the idea that we were having not one but two little ones. Surely two wouldn't be that much more hard work than one could it!!!! I started to search websites about multiple pregnancy - I have to say it was pretty scarce, everything was about singleton pregnancy. I did find some information, but not much and each website that I did find (which I could count on one hand) said more or less the same thing. After a few weeks, I decided to look at purchasing items for twins and that was pretty poor too. I know having a mulitple birth wasnt that common, but surely there was more information around, but I couldn't locate it. All the baby websites were nearly all about singleton pregnancies - I wanted to write to each one of them and ask them why they didn't cover multiple pregnancies and why wasn't more things available for mums of multiple births - but then again, I suppose its easy to say that, after all I didn't think about that before. My sickness and tiredness had started to drop off after I reached the 12 week stage, although very happy about the tiredness, I was a little worried that the sickness had dropped off, even though I know its perfectly normal for that to happen - suppose you know that when you feel so sick it reminds you that all is okay. Over the next couple of weeks, I kept getting slight twinges at the bast of my stomach, I mentioned them to Paul and he suggested I contact the midwife. I didn't want to seem paranoid, so I left it. I didnt have any pains, sickness or anything else with Katie so I presumed I would sail through this pregnancy too.
